Byrnes’ Irish Pub, located in Bath, Maine, is a labor of love that began with Joe Byrnes’ dream of opening a traditional Irish pub. Joe, a Brooklyn native and retired Master Chief Petty Officer in the Navy, settled in Bath with his wife Pam, a local native. Together, they transformed a former wine bar into an authentic Irish gathering place.
The couple completed renovations in 2008 and actually opened their doors for the first time on St. Patrick’s Day to a packed house of patrons, eager to welcome in a new community tradition. Just two years later, Byrnes’ Irish Pub II opened in Brunswick, continuing their legacy and Irish tradition. Today, the Byrnes family continues to run both pubs, with the kids, Maggie and Patrick, managing the Bath and Brunswick locations, respectively.
A Date to Celebrate
St. Patrick’s Day is the cornerstone of Byrnes’ Irish Pub’s identity. Since opening day, the holiday has been marked by festive crowds, live music, and flowing Guinness. Whether the holiday falls on a weekday or weekend, the pubs draw loyal customers and new visitors alike. Joe noted, “Everyone wants to visit an Irish pub on St. Patrick’s Day. It’s a tradition for so many.”
Both locations embrace Irish culture and cuisine with a focus on authentic dishes such as corned beef and cabbage, lamb stew, beef stew, and shepherd’s pie. The Bath location features 21 taps, while Brunswick boasts 28, ensuring a wide selection of beer to complement the festivities.
Byrnes’ Pride
Byrnes’ prides itself on being a welcoming, family-oriented establishment. Guests are greeted with friendly service, traditional Irish fare, and a lively atmosphere. Signature menu items like the Reuben sandwich and “The Destroyer,” an open-faced pastrami sandwich, are year-round favorites, while seasonal additions keep the offerings fresh.
Dress for Success
Joe keeps his advice simple for restaurants looking to capture the holiday spirit: “Serve Guinness and corned beef. That’s what people are looking for.” The combination of traditional food, authentic Irish vibes, and a sense of community is what makes Byrnes’ Irish Pub a standout destination year-after-year.
As Byrnes’ Irish Pub prepares to celebrate its 17th anniversary this March 17th, the Bath location remains the heart of the business. Located at 38 Centre St., it’s a cornerstone of the local community and a hub of Irish heritage in Maine.
This year’s St. Patrick’s Day promises to continue the tradition, bringing together loyal patrons and new guests for a day of celebration, camaraderie, and, of course, Guinness.
